KILFYNN

I like to apologise for the delay with this blog.  im afraid im having real trouble with loading of photos.
two hours at the computer mans yesterday were unable to solve the problem!!

We were treated to two glorious days coursing at Kilflynn this week.  This young  Club left no stones unturned putting on a first class meeting.  Conditions underfoot for the dogs were ideal.   The confidence shown in this club was reflected by the quality entry in the Cups

Judge Jerry Mulcare        Slipper Martin Murphy

JOHN BYRNE rip

Yesterday was a sad day for Greyhound folk

Irish greyhound sport lost one of its greatest supporters yesterday when Paddy Byrne passed away after a brave battle with illness in recent years.

Known throughout the greyhound world as the “Catunda man”, Paddy was born, bred and lived all his life in Dublin. Born in 1932 into a greyhound environment, he attended his first Irish Derby final back in 1944 at twelve years of age.

A butcher for more than forty years, he passed over the shop in Beaumont to his sons and established a fine greyhound complex in St Margarets.

Over the years he owned and trained some great greyhounds, ranging from Glow and Seskin Mist to Blue Rum, Catunda Flame and then the great Catunda Lace (grand dam of Derby winner Like A Shot) and dog of the year Catunda Harry.

Paddy Byrne was as much immersed in coursing as he was with the track and he thoroughly enjoyed the success of Catunda Ashmore in the final of the Champion Stakes at Powerstown in February 2009. Indeed the same dog gave Paddy his latest success when winning the Adios Alonso Sprint final at Shelbourne on Derby semi-final night.

Son Michael has trained the Catunda dogs for many years and he will proudly maintain the family flag. Paddy’s wife Imelda is one of the great ladies of the Irish track scene and will hopefully continue to grace Shelbourne with her presence.

We extend the sympathies of the greyhound world to Imelda and her family. Paddy was a most popular individual and, while we had many an argument over the years, they always ended with a touching of the glasses and a grin. In recent times he has turned up at Shelbourne on a very regular basis in his wheelchair, game to the last. He will be sadly missed.

May he rest in peace

Mr John Codd RIP

Mr John Codd, President of Enniscorthy Coursing Club, stalwart working member of the Enniscorthy Club for over 70 years and member of the Irish Coursing Club’s Hall of Fame passed away peacefully in the early hours of this morning (Tuesday 28th September).

John was pre-deceased 34 years ago by his wife Kitty.

The Codd family have been involved for generations in greyhound sport in Co Wexford and their Cushie prefix is known far and wide. The Enniscorthy coursing meeting moved to their farm at The Woodlands in 1997.

John was inducted into the ICC Hall of Fame on Saturday 28th March 2009 and on being informed of his Award said “I accept it on behalf of all those who have played their part in helping to maintain the high standards of coursing at Enniscorthy”.

This quiet man of coursing will be very sadly missed by all who knew him.

John is reposing at the home of his son Tom and daughter in law Marea.

House private until 2pm on Wednesday. Leaving the house at 7pm on Wednesday for the Church in Ballindaggin, Enniscorthy.

Funeral Mass at 11am on Thursday and burial immediately afterwards in the adjoining cemetery.

No Flowers. Donation if desired to the Irish Red Cross.

Our sympathy to his children Pat, John, Kathleen,Ann, Mark, Tom, Mary, Theresa, Mairead and Pauline, grandchildren, relations, friends and members of Enniscorthy CC at this sad time.

May John Rest In Peace.
