FIRST RESULTS

I took a run down to Liscannor today........The weather stayed dry and a bit chilly.   The ground was the best ive seen it for a while now and  the hares were strong.

There were a few notable runs in the Trial stakes ....I liked the look of Crafty  Denso, Chaboy and Galeforce Wonder in the DTS.......alot of the bitch pups ran green but those showing well were Tilt Your Skirt and Car Road

Ill be heading off to Kilflynn in the morning......lets hope for another day of first class coursing.

The realities of the Ban in England...........not a easy video to watch as it concentrates on hares being killed to show just how indiscriminate the gun is.......Most people are under the impression that the gun is a kinder way to kill!

Thankfully the Hares in Ireland fare much better as it is a highly controlled sport.....and of course the dogs are muzzled

HARE SEMINAR 2011

With only two weeks before the season starts many coursing people attended this years Hare seminar.  It followed the usual pattern of sharing hare husbandry tips.....both old and new and gave clubs a chance to share experiences..... There has been a big stride forward in hare husbandry over the years and the yearly seminar has certainly helped with this.

The tour of the Hare Parks at Powerstown is a great way to catch up with improvements as every year there is something new.  Ive noticed a big drive for more covered feeding stations and this year all fencing has been  covered.  This not only helps to keep the fields more sheltered but stops hares injuring themselves on the fencing.

All fencing in the park is now covered ....both internal paddocks and the perimeter fence.

This provides shelter  security and helps prevent injuries to hares on the fence wire

HARE SEMINAR

Not long before we all start again......Things have gone smoothly with the Hare catching Licences and reports so far are that hares are plentiful.   I had a days birdwatching on Sunday and saw more hares than birds!

here`s one I saw.....all were big fine hares brought on by a dry summer

Coursing starts 1st of October but before then we have the yearly Hare Seminar at Powerstown Park

This is always worth attending.  Coursing people from all over the country pool their knowledge of hare husbandry and all things Coursing.  Plus a tour of facilities behind the  Clonmel Festival.

October is fast approaching and preparations are well underway at Liscannor and Kilflynn as the curtain is lifted on another coursing season. We all know that great hares make great coursing and with that in mind the third staging of the IRISH COURSING CLUB HARE SEMINAR will take place at Powerstown Park, Clonmel, Co. Tipperary on Saturday, September 17th commencing at 11.00am. 
To date, the seminar has been well attended with excellent participation from the floor coupled with live demonstrations of tagging, dosing and handling of the hare. We are sure this year will be no exception as we cover the main topics and discuss some new ideas also. The event will conclude with a tour of the hare parks in Powerstown and the boxing area. Light refreshments will be provided following the tour. 
Full details are being circulated to Club Secretaries who should then advise Eugene Cooney of the likely attendees from their club.

MILLSTREET GOLFING CLASSIC

Millstreet Coursing Club are holding there seventh annual Golf Classic at Kanturk Golf club on Friday 9th September.
All there previous Golf Classics have been very successful due to the tremendous support from the people of North Cork and East Kerry and many greyhound enthusiasts from all over the country.
There will be excellent prizes on offer, with prizes for the first three teams and a prize for the best gross score. A meal will be provided for all participants in the Kanturk Golf Clubhouse.

A Day with Dan O`Connor & Family

I spent a couple of days in Kerry last month and couldnt bypass the chance to visit Scartaglen, and see the O`Connor Family.

Dan and his family live for coursing, and are example of what makes the sport so special.

Just a ordinary family who all enjoy the same hobby and have fun together.

All the dogs are home bred and are kenneled  in the back garden.

March Is On was whelped there out of their own bitch Dedicated. Once the pups reach earmarking 

they are then passed on to good friend and partner in the dogs Paddy Fitzgerald (Glin) to be reared on.

the saplings then return to Dan for training.

Saw this young lad down a country lane yesterday......Hares have this habit od staying on the road and running in front of the car so I pulled up and waited to let it settle ...i didnt want to drive it away from home

MUCKY KENNELS

Last week I picked the worst of weather to make a visit to Macroom. in Co Cork....The last time I visited the Mucky Kennels, back in 2005, it was just a field and pure imagination.

Arriving at the gates I could see the dream had unfolded 

Attention to detail everywhere has produced a super place .  Don tells me they visited many top kennels to get ideas and tried to use the best from all,  It is extreamlly well thought out and well planned to make life easy to work and a great place for dogs to live

As you walk into the kennels its nice to see the Covers showing Stakes won....Pride of place is Sullane Signs Oaks Jacket.........a lady whos now a top class brood.

Runs attached to kennels make turnout easy plus time in grass runs  gives them a varied day

James making up the feeds in a well stocked kitchen....best meat is bought in 

The Buckelys own a fine Hotel in Macroom and any leftovers come in handy feeding the pups.

Every dog on the place looked in great order,  anyone looking for pups to be reared should give this kennel consideration as the  facillities  second to none

This cracking dog is by a Derby winner out of a Oaks winner.  He had a super litter in the paddock and must be worth consideration by breeders.
