A GREAT WEEKEND

First of all a big thankyou to Michael McNamara for taking the time to video the coursing meetings and allowing us all to see them free of charge!  Everyone is very greatful.

And second a special mention must be said to two Family run kennels who had a great weekend!!

The Crafty Kennels.......will be on cloud nine.........and deserve to be!!  A Bitch Stake win with Crafty Frazello and  Two Oaks Trial Stakes with Crafty Bonito and Crafty Toco......at the Lochrea & Westport meeting

Interesting pedigree on these pups..........there dam, Crafty Divino is by track dog Roanokee and is a a 4x4 to Whisper Whishes.  The Sire of the Pups is Crafty Hugo.......a dog who is very special to the whole family.
A great payoff for the hard work put in.............as you know I was over there in the summer and the dogs were gleaming!!

CRAFTY HUGO
Hugo is standing at Stud and two TS winners so early in the season is a great start for him.

Another great Coursing Family were all smiles at Crohane............here it was the turn of the Condon Family who won both the All Age Bitch and the Oaks Trial Stake with home bred bitches out of Why Tanyard Jane.

Isnt this what coursing is all about ....Familys sharing a great day together

From the Sporting Press

Mum’s word to stay in dogs paid off for John with Volga Daisy’s opening win of the season

John Scully has started dreaming of winning next year’s Oaks after his Volga Daisy became the first bitch to qualify for the bitches’ classic when successful in a trial stake at Liscannor.

The homebred daughter of Musical Time-Glowing Times showed great courage to see of her opponents at the County Clare fixture and book her ticket for the National Meeting in February. Scully told the Sporting Press: “She’s only a small bitch weighing 64 pounds but is a real battler and ran really well to win the stake. “Being only a May pup I thought that she might struggle, but she got better with each run up the field; I think the presence of Judicial Best in her dam line gave her the stamina and guts to succeed.”

Things didn’t look good when she came out of slips in her first ever course way off the pace. Scully said “Luckily it was a bye-course and she must have been left eight lengths behind the other dog. However, by the time she had reached the top of the field she was in front, which gave us hope that she could do well.”

Volga Daisy’s closest course was in the final against Lowland Deuce. Scully said: “She was challenged in the latter stages but stuck to her guns and won by a length. Hopefully she can build on this victory”. Volga Daisy is expected to come out again in an All-Age Cup at one of the Christmas Meetings. Scully said “We’ll leave her off until the middle of November before we get her ready to run again. Being only a young bitch, we hope there is more to come from her. It’s just great to be able to already have one Clonmel ticket in the bag”.

Cork handler Barry Lynch has a lot of influence on Scully and advised him to buy Volga Daisy’s grand dam Elm Sunset. He says “I met Barry by chance and he put me on the right road. He advised me to buy a couple of greyhounds that have turned out well and done me proud. Volga River was the first one and he won the local Connaught Cup for me in 2004. The other was Elm Sunset, who has produced the goods as a brood bitch.”

Elm Sunset’s first litter produced four trial stake winners. Scully says “Glowing Times won her trial stake at Loughrea for me and was beaten in the second round of the Oaks by the eventual winner, Sullane Sign. She had such great stamina that I mated her to Musical Time to put some pace in her pups. There were seven in the litter and I have kept four of them. I was going to sell Volga Daisy as she was the smallest at just 64 pounds but my daughter Bridie took a shine to the bitch and persuaded me to keep her.”

Scully is waiting for Glowing Times to break in season again and intends taking her to Wilton Time. For next season Scully has a litter of Wilton Time pups from his brood bitch Elm Sunset. He says: “There are four of them and they look promising at this stage.” Scully is retired and lives in Atenry with his wife Rita. They have three children; Patrick, Tiernan and Bridie.

John got into the sport through his father, Patrick. He says: “My father used to go to Loughrea coursing meeting on his bike in the 1940’s and telegraph the national media with the results. He had a brilliant bitch called Sunset Promise back in the 1960’s. She was the runner up in the 1964 Oaks in Clonmel. However, it was in the breeding paddocks that she really excelled. She produced Sparkys Girl, who he sold to Ginger Murphy. She won the 1967 Oaks and was a great brood bitch herself, producing two Irish Cup winners with Fancy Stuff and Tartan Black. Me and my brother Joe used to go everywhere with Dad but he passed away suddenly in 1988 and we were not sure whether to

Open Coursing from England.............Good Luck to English Coursing we hope you get your great sport back.

I understand that since coursing has been banned that Wildlife Crime has exploded over there as the Hare no longer has the protection of  Coursing Clubs.    This is one thing that "antis " refuse to listen too.  And don't seem to even care about..........Its poachers not coursing clubs that will cause the extinction of the Hare

HARE FOOD

NOTICE FROM RATHKEALE

We have being feeding the hares at Rathkeale this year with a feed specially formulated for rabbits. It is a complete diet, high fibre, vitamins minerals etc. The hares are doing very well on the feed and we are satisfied the new diet is better and much easier than the previous feeding system of oats, sheaf oats , sallys etc.

The only problem is that the minimum order is 3 tonnes. Redmills made the feed but for commercial reasons this is the smallest batch thay can make. We have taken in 3 tonne but will probably only use half of this. If there is any club who want to try a few bags (25kgs) they can call me at 086 8109990. The price is €12 (twelve euro

Judge ..Tony Reddan

Slipper  Richie Quinn Jr

This was my second visit to the Regional CC.....what a great club it is..........run by the Quinn Family and close friends.  The whole thing ran like clockwork .  Mighty hares that run straight and Strong
Ive spent some time with this Hare Husbandry team and you cannot fail to be impressed with there love for the job.....the quite way they treat the hares shows in the way they flourish.  Every hare is important to this team!

A special word of mention must go to Slipper Richie Quinn Jr who slipped his first full meeting here.  Day One he concentrated on settling pups in slips and getting them away evenly,  with a turn or two at the top of the field on the Sunday.  His judgement was first class with not a single early turn.  Excellent stuff... I look forward to this young slipper being given more chances to gain experience from other clubs.

JAMES CURREN ALL AGE CUP

A bit of a surprise to see this chap lift this Cup but he did so on merrit.  The breeding is there....Bexhill Eoin out of Windfarm Lady ......means hes related to some of the fastest up the field. And his performance so far cannot be faulted.  A first round bye let him in under the radar......a 10 euro bet on him at that point would have gone down well!
His next round run with tough performer Gingerbread Lad was a good performance

Meanwhile at the bottom of the card Funny Honey was stamping her authority on the stake.  A TS runner up last year,  who did her running in the West. She is trained by the quite man, Gerry Holihan for Basil and Bernie Holihan and was the first of a fine double on the day
