CLONMEL NATIONALIST

Our sincere thanks once again to editor Michael Heverin of

“The (Clonmel) Nationalist” for publishing the following preview to our meeting. It is great to know that the local papers are willing to give coverage to our sport.

“All roads lead to Ballyglasheen, Kilsheelan, on Saturday and Sunday next as Clonmel & Kilsheelan Coursing Club host their annual Hotel Minella Tipperary Cup meeting. Now in it’s 94^th year, the Tipperary Cup is the longest running club cup in the country and one of the most prestigious.

This year’s 16 runner affair is set to be a top-class stake with entrants of the  highest calibre including last year’s Irish Cup finalist Johnny Casanova, who always has a huge following,  along with cup winners from this season Dougal Town, Party Jay Cee, and Wallace Chief who represents the famed Matthews’ kennels in Newry.

The Seán Drohan Memorial All-Aged Bitch Stake is of similar quality, with the Marie Roche trained  Lady Bellevue attempting to make history by becoming the first greyhound to enter the  winner’s enclosure for three successive years at this historic venue. She meets last year’s Oaks Trial stake winner Windgap Heresay, owned in Kilsheelan by the Button Syndicate,  in the first course of what is arguably the hottest bitch stake so far this year. Last year’s beaten finalist Hollyoak Pegasus and Oaks Trial Stake runner-up Pleasant Sight are also in the mix hoping to renew old rivalries, along with several more who graced Powerstown in February.

Both Trial Stakes are littered with entrants who have the breeding to ensure that whoever is successful will fly the club’s flag prominently at the National meeting and last but not least, the Frank Byrne Memorial and Brackford Cup, which is confined to active working members of the club, will see no quarter asked or given among the locals. We look forward to see friends from near and far descend on the club grounds this weekend, and to those who may never have been to a coursing meeting before a warm welcome will be extended and enjoyable day out guaranteed.”

Lets hope the weather stays fair as the ground is plenty soft enough now!!!!

SIENA STEEL

Another top class Cup dog we have lost so far this season is Siena Steel.  A dog with huge pace but luck never seemed to favour him in the big ones.

                      
                                  As a pup,  Won a Trial stake at  Ballymena.  He then went to Clonmel for the Derby and was flying when" unlucky out of slips" in the semi finals.............A course that saw the "two Slippers" at Clonmel brought in.

On his way to a Conaught Cup Victory

He also won The South Clare Cup and was a finalist in the Kingdom Cup.

He then went to the Irish Cup where he took part in one of the greatest Irish Cups of Memory , being one of the semi finalists,  in the two most memorable buckles of all time.

A truely great hound , he will be missed by all coursing fans this year.

Sadly broke a hock when in the lead on his way to defending the Conaught Cup.

Sad to see him exit as reports say he was better than ever this year

 The coursing fields loss is the breeding paddocks gain,  because this 87lb dog is now at stud....
 By  Castle Pines  out of  Siena Star...............a damline that goes back through Blur to the great Smokey Flavour.............interestingly producing dogs with good track form as well so he could be of interest to racing bred bitches.  But none the less a great asset to coursing bitches

WALLACE GREEN

When we go coursing we may curse our bad luck , but if we take home a sound dog that should be enough as theres another day.

Sadly this is not to be for Wallace Green as a bad shoulder injury means we are robbed of seeing one of the Stars of the field running again.

So impressed was I,  by him at Freshford I went and bought a bitch pup from Carrick Sams next litter.

There are a few dogs that really give you a buzz watching and Wallace Green was right at the top of the list.  For me as a photographer he always gave me a great photo............such was the length and height of his stride..........a stunning dog to look at.

But mainly it was the amazing runs he could pull out of the hat ............a super fast dog

Most people will put this run at the top of there lists for the best buckle they have ever seen..............Two great dogs going head to head

IRISH CUP SEMI FINAL

The sun came out for the Final Day at Listowel and we saw some good coursing.  There were plenty of dogs getting work but the hares were well up to it.

Lovely friendly club ..........it was a good gesture that they laid on a free Hog Roast with cabbage and bacon.....first class!!

JOHN PRENDEVILLE CUP

The expected showdown between Wallace Green and Shaneboy Daz was not to be.   After recovering from hitting the escape hard on saturday , Green was withdrawn lame after winning his first run on sunday.

At the bottom of the card Shaneboy Daz was galloping his way to Victory in a faultless manner.  A personal Favourite ,  Its great to see him back in such fine form

Bred owned and trained by the whole Kiely Family he is by Bartime out of Shaneboy Ella.............and is a brother to Shandrum Bar. Its a line that has been in the Kiely family for four generations and goes back to 1981 Oaks winner Five to Eight.............is there a more stunning dog in training?

It was good to see the ultra consistent Chubbys Heather get a reward.  Only a may pup she ran with great credit last year without gaining a ticket . A different story this year as she ran to a emphatic victory.  Another who is owned bred and trained.............this time by the O`Meara family..........again the line has been with them for generations and throwing top quality dogs.  By Bexhill Eoin out of Chubbys Princess.............Princess is a litter sister to Quality and Gold and Chubbys Accord...........two Oaks winning bitches.  Chubbys Heather herself is sister to Derby runner up Colina Damask.  They  come from the O`Meara super brood  bitch Ardnalee Laura who is also dam of Irish Cup winner Sandy Sea
