WHAT IS COURSING

 Sadly many lies are put about by the anti Coursing brigade and the press and media seem to be happy to print these lies.

So lets deal in some facts...........

Coursing is highly regulated........it is over seen by Goverment rangers and in order for coursing to start 3 goverment Licences must be sought

It is not run by bunch of " blood thirsty maniacs" going out a doing what they wish!!

But by rural family comunities ...........very much like the GAA

After getting these Licences it does not end there..............there is endless paperwork filled out by every club..................before...........during ..........and after a meeting..............These are endorsesd and ratified by Vets and Wildlife Rangers.

Coursing Clubs do not sell hares to other clubs at the end of a meeting!!

Hares are released back into the wild after every meeting  under the supervision of Wildlife Rangers.
and all relevent paperword to endorse this is kept by these rangers.

Every single hare that is captured is tagged and accounted for!............this information is supervised by the Wildlife Rangers.

All Hares caught by the clubs are wormed and treated for bacterial infections that are endemic in the wild hare.

The farmlands that hares live on are maintained by coursing clubs to discourage poaching  and to keep foxes down.............these are the biggest killers of the Irish Hare

Coursing is a fantastic Family hobby............children love it and enjoy the healthy outdoor lifestyle it gives them...........

A attack on Coursing is a attack n the rural way of life and a real threat to the incomes of the many industries that rely on the incomes it brings in..................50 million euros a year is spent.........mainly in rural Ireland in support of coursing

Teenagers shouting there family dog home.................there are plenty of other things these young ladies could be upto.............but coursing keeps families together

The ESCAPE

 At the recent Hare Seminar we had a very interesting talk by Aiden Supple about the the best way to make a Hare Escape.

I must say I found this very interesting.........Ive noticed many dogs pile into the flat escapes........moreso on the short fields.

We were told that a easy way to make them is with four "builders panels"......these can be ordered from the Creamerys.  Above is a diagram of how to set them up.  There needs to be a "gap" of 10" underneath to allow the hares escape.

 

And here Aiden is showing the angles to place the panels.

At Glin we saw this style of Escape in action............I must admit it worked very well.............very few hares turned back once in the escape............and there were far fewer dogs smashing into it.   In the main they run down the side as they pulled up.

This is the finnished escape.................as you can see all upright poles are well padded with straw..............The bottom has Thick foam protection.  Aiden said that he used a thick layer of straw and found it as good.

 

 Above the green , foam filled section,   I noticed that black, sorbo rubber matts had been fastened to the panels............giving more protection and making a neat tidy finnish.

Local Derby

 It was a special day for local owners John Barrett and Conor Sheehan.............not being content with taking the Desmond Cup with Bexhill Brian they stormed through the Local Derby with owner trained Bexhill Noel............it was a popular win.............I was very impressed with this lovely close knit club,.........very friendly and well worth the trip down,  The scenery on the way is worth the drive alone.

The Reserve Oaks was won by Matt Hyland pup Rosie Josie..........she took command halfway up the field and stayed on well.    Trained by Pat OConnell and owned by Tadgh Enright and Richard Walsh.

                                                                                                                                                                    .....from the first litter of  Three Fools,and bred by John Brown.....yet another from the Saftey Leader line.  Three Fools was smart on the field winning a reserve TS at Mitchelstown....a TS at Waterford..........The Corn na Feile Oaks at Abbeyfeale  .....Going three rounds in the Minella Oaks and winning the Select Bitch Stakes at Tipperary.      Shes off to a great start in the breeding paddocks and I understand her next litter are by Janey Mac Aroo..............one of lifes treasures!

The Bitch All Age was a hard fought affair.................full credit goes to the   Winner Abbeyglen Judy , trained by  Mike & John Rohan.... she took big scalps in fine style. The final was a great buckle with Judy inching ahead at the turn.

This Stake was yet another win for Judicial Best.................hes showing up well early in the season.

DESMOND CUP

Well.....it all happened in this Stake.!

The quarter finals saw the excitement start when the favourite, Wallace Green and Atlantic Style both ran unsighted and were sent back to slips..............only for kennel companion Bexhill Brian and Floating Rain to do the same in the next course.  Both the Matthews runners won the reruns.

And to the amazement of the large crowd both dogs then managed to overcome the handicap, yet again and it was a Matthews double in the Final.  This was a great performance by the Matthews kennels , on a 100% record in the Cups so far.

While I was impressed with Gallys Bridge on saturday, seeing him run a "back to slips" made me think that victory would be a hard task for a pup in a 64 dog stake.
It was a good training performance by Dan Brassil as the dog was still fresh at the end of the day.

There were emotional scenes at Glin this afternoon when Gallys Bridge, owned by The Gally Syndicate, Tralee triumphed in the Derby Trial Stake.
Syndicate member and Co Kerry C.C stalwart Sean O’Brien was laid to rest on Friday morning last, the opening day of the Glin fixture.
However the O’Brien family gave their blessing to trainer Dan Brassil to run Gallys Bridge as it is what Sean would have wanted.
Sean’s fellow syndicate members Liam Brassil, Martin Enright and Ena Galvin will be heartbroken this evening that Sean is not with them to celebrate this wonderful success.

What a cracking Cup so early in the season.  I make no excuse for being a big fan of Wallace Green................he gives 100% and never takes his eye off the hare...........love him!!

Id say theres a few nice dog pups in the Derby............one I like the look of ....Gallys Bridge ran unsighted first course,  so a "back to slips" puts him at a disadvantage.......and its a 64 dog stake so all energy will be needed.

Another impressive pup.....imho is Stiff Test............showed huge pace in 3rd round, to then get a bit of work. At 100lb this fella could do without the turns .....and came out looking like a tired dog in the next round.  None the less hes one for the note book!

The weather improved for the later runs and the attendence was good.

For those going for first time.....From Limerick take the N69.........At Glin turn left into the main villiage road....................At the fork take the Left turn..............the coursing ground is along that road on the right.
