KILFLYNN

Week 1 – Kilflynn & Liscannor
After the long off-season and many days and weeks of waiting, the first action of the season got underway in Liscannor and Kilflynn on Saturday past, with good coursing on show over the two and three day meetings respectively. The 32-runner Stephen Fuller Memorial Cup at Kilflynn was the highlight of the weekend’s action while the first three Clonmel tickets were also up for grabs.
At All Times (Skellig Wish/Skellig Babe), showed plenty of promise on a number of outings last year and it all clicked into place in Kilflynn on Monday as he collected his first stake in the Stephen Fuller Memorial All-Age.  In what looked a strong cup on paper, At All Times held all the aces and beat a number of decent performers from last season, including Crafty Resino, Stephens Owen and outright favourite Kyle Bruce in the final, the latter being a Derby quarter-finalist and an Irish Cup semi-finalist. At All Times now sits in a nice position to book his place in the Champion Stakes in Clonmel and there may well be another few from this stake who can join him in the famed All-Age event
At Liscannor, the McDonagh All-Age Cup went to Bower King (Kingsmill Dynamo/Bower Sign). A trial stake winner at Cork last year, he was unfortunately withdrawn after his first round success in the Derby at Powerstown Park. There were a few withdrawals from the second round of the Cup but King took advantage and made the perfect start to the season on the Cliffs of Moher. Connections will now look to add another victory in the not too distant future.
The All-Age Bitch division could be particularly interesting this season and they got off to a good start at the weekend. Ballyberry Baby (Kyle James/Mountain Guest) took the honours in Kilflynn and followed up on her trial stake success in Knockgraffon last year. Ballyverry got the better of So Long Honey in the final, while Crafty Merlano and Ballymac Adelpha made up a very competitive last four.
In Liscannor, the All-Age Bitch Stake went to Foxhill Annie (Bexhill Eoin/Foxhill Rio). A very pacey performer last season, reaching a semi-final and a final, she went a few better to win this stake from Clonreddan Molly, a runner with a similar profile to the winner. Annie, a half-sister to Blueview’s Sam and Dan, will no doubt be another lady for the breeding paddocks.
The first three trial stake tickets of the season were secured this week while the first of the seasons reserve trial stakes was also captured at Kilflynn. The first Derby ticket of the season was an all “Pumpkin” affair with Pumpkin Adios the winner from Pumpkin Return. The winner is by Adios Alonso/Pumpkin View and is only a late May puppy and has done well to capture his ticket on the first week of the season. The Oaks trial stake at the meeting went to Oilean Diligent (Kyle Calvin/Diligent). A first winner for Kyle Calvin as a sire, getting the better of Danaghers Decoy in the final.
The Kilflynn Oaks Trial stake produced a number of winners last season as can be expected from a sixty-four runner event so early in the season. Inslips All Inn was the winner on that occasion and some of the others included Leigh Snowie, Sequin and Somelittlelady. This year’s renewal will certainly produce more winners as the season goes on and the standard may well be similar. This looked like a good event and the winner, Not Really (Kingsmill Dynamo/Wilton Millie), was well fancied from her early performances in the stake. She got the better of Ballymac Blue in the final, a runner that looks more than capable of picking up a trial stake in the weeks to come.
The Reserve Derby Trial stake at the meeting was won by Blades of Music (Kingsmill Dynamo/Blades of Glory) for Elaine Guiney, getting the better of Ballymac Seb in the final. Blades of Glory has produced some of the fastest performers in recent seasons, with the likes of Kilkeale Hero, Vale View Flyer, Blades of Hope, Kyle Bruce, Boshki and Breaska Lantern. Is it a sign of things to come for the season?
