Paddy McGhee gives his view on last weeks meetings
, Cashel, Regional & Westmeath
Cashel is the obvious starting point from last weekend. A successful meeting which produced some top class winners.
Sunlight (Adios Alonso/ Babe), landed the Morrissey Cup in fine style, beating Rover in the semi-final and Darlan in the final. Sunlight, unlucky in his puppy season when impressing in made a pleasing start to his All-age season for connections.
Loyal Lyric takes the final from Foto Castle
Loyal Lyric (Musical Time/ Smurf) landed the All-age bitch stake at the meeting beating the fast Castle in the final. This is Lyric’s third victory after her trial stake win at Balbriggan and a 32 runner All-Age cup at last year which sealed her place in for the second year running. A real fast lady, Loyal Lyric is now in a lovely position to make it back to for a third successive year for the Donnelly’s.
White Sands Hotel cup was won by Mystic ( Magic/ Mystic) beating Mystery Eoin in the final. Important points were at stake here and Mystic joins winner Floating Patriot on six points.
Maggie Dan (March Is On/Big Maggie) joins her litter sister Turning Pace on four points after landing the All-Age bitch stake at the meeting. A third All-Age bitch stake for the sire of these too impressive ladies March Is On. Town ran up a trial stake to Tynwald Jane last season at and filled the same position in this stake.
Power of Peace ( Dynamo/Polar Lights) beaten in the Derby third round by Kyle Calvin, produced the goods in the James Curran Memorial Cup at Regional. The Michael and Eimear owned runner continued his good form in a competitive event and beat the Spillane’s Vince in the final.
POWER OF PEACE
Although Vince was beaten in the final, the Spillane’s explosive start to the season continued as Vicky ( Blake/ Abbey) landed the All-Age bitch stake. She came into the stake under the radar and beat the more fancied runners Queen, Rocky Hill and Magical Amber on her way to victory. A third victory in two weeks for the Spillane family.
The Belsize Cup at Westmeath went to the track-bred Flash (Head Bound/Our Favourite). Wood Dynamo was fancied strongly prior to the competition but had to settle for second best behind the Sammy trained runner who had the benefit of an outing at in the first week of the season.
Eight trial stakes were decided over the weekend, two of which were Reserve Trial Stakes. Kyle James and Magic provided two winners each respectively while Razor , Adios Alonso, Castle Pines and Dynamo all added one each.
Fairy (Kyle James/ A Dazzler), a February puppy landed the Derby trial stake at Cashel in good fashion while the 64 runner Oaks trial stake went to River (Castle Pines/Quality and Dash).
The Derby trial stake went to Kitchen (Razor / Mo ) a late April puppy. Clocking faster than All-Age cup winner Mystic, I’m sure he will be well fancied between now and the Derby in February. The reserve Oaks trial stake at the meeting was won by Not My Pick ( Dynamo/Bower Sign), beating Alberta in the final, a full trial stake will now be on the radar.
James (Kyle James/ Chill), a January dog was successful at Regional and the reserve bitch trial stake went to the Niall owned ( Magic/La ), a late June bitch, she can be expected to improve throughout the year in pursuit of her full trial stake.
Finally the remaining two trial stakes at Westmeath were won by (Adios Alonso/) a May dog and Bakers ( Magic/ ) who capped off a good week for sire Magic.
